How to Get Clear Skin (Naturally!)

Every person covets a radiant complexion. Some people were born with it. The rest of us have to work for it. Learn how to get clear skin with these tips for any age!

How to Get Clear Skin (Naturally)

Please note that links to products in this post may be affiliate links. Thank you for supporting the free content I create!

I have the most naturally imperfect skin of anyone. Some people were born with flawless, gorgeous skin. Then there are those like me, who…weren’t. My sensitive skin has always been an issue for me, and so I’ve spent a lot of time researching and figuring out how to get clear skin.

The first thing I want to point out is that the path to clear skin is not the same for everyone. What works for one person, may not work for the next. What triggers a breakout for one person, might not have the same effect on her best friend.

This is most likely why, when I was growing up, I was led to believe that there was nothing I could do, short of harsh medication, to get clear skin. The food I ate, they told me, had nothing to do with my breakouts. It was hormonal and I’d outgrow it, they told me.

When I was in my 20s and 30s still didn’t outgrow my acne breakouts, I figured it must just be genetic. I was born with problem skin and I was stuck with it for the rest of my life.

Thankfully, I kept reading and researching. Bad skin can be really life-disrupting and I wanted to do whatever I could to make it better. Turns out, there was a lot more to the story than they were telling me.

After years of trying everything from the apple detox diet (really!) to every acne cream under the sun, I wanted to share the things that have made the biggest difference in helping my skin.

By no means is my skin perfect or clear 100% of the time. I hesitated to even post the picture above because I still have plenty of imperfections. BUT, I’ve can say that at 40, my skin is more clear than it’s ever been. I’ve figured out what helps and hurts my skin the most and how to get clear skin, most of the time. And this article is for those of you still searching for answers.

I’m not wearing makeup (except a little mascara) in the picture above, and that’s something I never would have done in my teens, 20s, or early 30s.

How to Get Clear Skin (Naturally)

There are some things that you can do to improve the condition of your skin. Our skin is the biggest organ of our body, and regardless of what you may have heard, what we eat and our lifestyle does impact it. We absolutely can control its appearance, at least to an extent.

Some people may need to do every single thing on this list in order to get clear skin (that’s me, raising my hand…) while others may only need to tweak one area in their life. Like I’ve mentioned before, how to get clear skin is very personal to the individual. Chances are, though, there IS something I talk about here that will help you.

Find the right skin care routine.

Going to bed with a face full of makeup isn’t going to be good for the average person’s complexion. You need some kind of nightly skin care routine. While not washing your face at all isn’t probably wise, washing your skin too often or with too harsh of a cleanser can also wreak havoc and cause breakouts.  The key is to find what works for YOU. This is often going to require some trial and error. It took me years to find the right formula for my face.

What finally worked for me to balance the natural oils in my skin and stop the regular breakouts was the oil cleansing method. It sounds counterintuitive to wash your face with oil, but it turns out that oil is exactly what my skin needed. It naturally balances your skin’s oil.

Yes, you do need some oil on your face–if you strip it all away it signals your body to create more and that can lead to even more breakouts! The oil cleansing method balances your natural oils by washing away the bad oils and bacteria and replenishing the good oils and bacteria.

The right balance is key. The products I use and recommend for the oil cleansing method are Klo Organic Beauty cleanser and serum duo. You can read more about my experience with the oil cleansing method here.

If the oil cleansing method is not for you, look for a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away the oils. A simple Charcoal Cleansing Bar is perfect followed by a lightweight moisturizer. (<—my husband uses this one and loves it.)

I have found that most topical creams address the symptom and not the cause. It’s better to treat what’s causing the breakouts instead of the just treating the symptom. When you do that, you get caught in an endless cycle of treating breakout after breakout!

Keep your hands and phone away from your face.

Oh, this sounds so simple, doesn’t it? So simple, yet such a hard habit to break if you are constantly touching your face or resting your chin in your hands. Once you are aware of it, however, you can make yourself stop and save your face.

Your phone can also transfer acne-causing bacteria to your face, so be cognizant not to talk with your phone next to your face for long periods, or at all if you can help it. Hands free talking is the way to go!

Wash your bedding often.

Your skin touches your bedding for 6-10 hours a night. (Who am I kidding? I can’t remember the last time I was in my bed for 10 hours!) You want it to be touching a clean surface. Dirt and bacteria transfers from your sheets and pillowcase to your skin and can clog your pores and cause breakouts.

If you have severe acne, I suggest changing your pillowcase every single night. Otherwise, changing it 1-4 times a week is a good idea to help keep your skin clear. If you suffer from body acne, the same routine is suggested for changing your sheets.

Sometimes, the answer to how to get clear skin is as simple as changing your bedding!

Balance your hormones.

This is the trickiest one on the list. In simple terms, imbalanced hormones cause your body to signal the need for more oil production, leading to excess oil. The overproduction of oil causes breakouts. Knowing that is the easy part. Balancing our hormones isn’t as easy.

There are a number of things that can contribute to our hormones getting out of whack.

How To Balance Your Hormones for Clear Skin

Manage Stress

Chronic stress is one of the biggest factors in messing up your hormones. There are some natural ways that you can manage your stress. Daily meditation is a HUGE help for me. Working out is another stress-reliever for me. Find what helps you to keep your stress levels in control.

Get Quality Sleep

Not getting enough sleep and disrupting your natural circadian rhythm can contribute to hormonal imbalance. Try to go to bed around the same time every night and get up around the same time, as well. Your hormones work on a schedule and they like it when you stay on a schedule, too. If you have trouble falling asleep, here are some tips to help you fall asleep naturally. If you struggle to get quality, sound sleep, a supplement formulated to promote sleep like this one may help. I use and love this one. (Side note:  I am a MegaFood ambassador, but this is not a paid shout out. I will mention the products I use as it fits naturally into my content because I use and love them.)

Exercise Regularly

Not only will exercising regularly help with your stress levels, it also helps keep your hormones balanced. Make sure you are exercising regularly, but don’t overexercise, but that can also lead to imbalanced hormones!

Think of Goldilocks…not too much, not too little, but juuuuust right! How much is the right amount? That depends on the individual, of course. Strive for 3 solid workouts a week at a minimum, but make sure you are taking a complete rest day at least once per week.

Eat Well for Balanced Hormones

A poor diet and poor digestion can lead to hormonal imbalances. Foods that contribute to hormonal imbalances are refined carbohydrates and overconsumption of fats high in omega 6 fatty acids such as safflower oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil, soybean oil, and peanuts.

For balanced hormones, focus on eating healthy fats like those found in avocado and wild-caught salmon and lots of fruits and vegetables. Read below for more information on how diet affects our skin!

Avoid Hormone-Disrupting Products

Unfortunately, modern society is filled with products that disrupt our hormones and cause imbalances. You can combat this by avoiding all plastic products as much as possible.

It’s also important to use personal care products that don’t have hormone-disrupting chemicals. My favorite brand that I know is safe and will not cause hormone imbalances is Beautycounter. Every single product they sell is safe and without hormone-disrupting chemicals.

Consider Supplementing Wisely

There are supplements that can help you balance your hormones naturally, which can help you get clear skin. The supplements I use and recommend for balanced hormones are Daily Maca Plus Nutrient Booster Powder and Adrenal Strength.

If you want to know how to get clear skin, you may need to explore you hormones deeply. Balancing them can take some work, but your complexion will thank you.

Exercise. But, shower after sweating.

As I mentioned, exercising is an important part of keeping your hormones balanced, which can help you keep your skin clear. If you tend to sweat and not shower soon after, however, you could be contributing to clogged pores and more breakouts. This doesn’t happen for everyone, but if your skin is breakout-prone, this is something to consider. Try to shower and put on clean clothes as soon as you can after you work out.

Clean up your diet.

Eating well can help keep our hormones balanced, but there’s more to the story when it comes to food and how to get clear skin. It isn’t easy to pinpoint exactly how diet affects our skin, because it can be very different for everyone. Here are the top foods that can cause breakouts for some people: dairy, gluten, refined carbohydrates, and sugar.

Notice I said some people. How do you know which are a problem for you? Be diligent. You can eliminate them all at once for a period of time and then add them back in one at a time to see how it affects your skin. We found The Whole30 to be a helpful program to follow to do this.

Without a doubt, sugar causes breakouts for me. I found this out in my late 20s when I strictly cut out all sugars for a period of time. Within a week, my skin was completely clear. It stayed that way until I started eating sugar again. Now, I am able to find a balance of eating small amounts of sugar. When I slip and eat too much, it shows up in my complexion!

What Foods Will Make Your Skin Clear?

Everyone wants to know how to get clear skin. While avoiding certain foods can help you get clear skin, eating certain foods can also help you get that radiant glow. Here are the foods you want to load up on for the best skin ever:

  • leafy green vegetables
  • broccoli
  • tomatoes
  • omega 3 fatty acid foods like salmon, chia seeds, walnuts, and sardines
  • antioxidant-rich berries like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries
  • collagen-rich foods like bone broth or collagen powder
  • vitamin A-rich foods like sweet potatoes, carrots, and pumpkin
  • green tea, especially matcha

A good, quality supplement I recommend to support clear skin is Skin, Hair, and Nails 2. I use and love it.

Getting clear skin is an individualized process. Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic pill that’s going to help you get clear skin fast. If you have patience, however, and take the time to learn about your body and how it interacts with your environment, you can get the best skin of your life, naturally. I’m happy to answer any questions in the comments or email me any time.

Cucumber Salad with Green Grapes and Avocado

Cucumber Salad takes a new spin by adding sweet green grapes, creamy avocado, and fresh mint. This is refreshing and delicious!Cucumber Salad with Green Grapes and Avocado and mint #summer #salad #healthy #vinegar #easy #sweet #avocado #vegan #paleo #whole30

Heads up! This Cucumber Salad with Green Grapes and Avocado recipe was originally published in 2014. An updated photo was added June 2018. Text has not been changed. Enjoy this refreshing summer recipe!

We have a local grocery store where, if you go the right day and the right time, you can make a full meal, including dessert, out of their sample offerings.  Whenever I tell the kids we are going to the grocery store they ask, “Which store?  Dorothy Lane Market?”

They know.  They know if we go to Kroger they aren’t going to have the same grocery-shopping experience.  (Although my wallet thanks me when we do.)

This cucumber salad comes from one of those famous samples.

The Dorothy Lane salad was a Cucumber Salad with Grapes and with the sample came a typed up recipe card so I could see exactly what went into it. While I liked their salad, I thought it could use a little tweaking.

First, I added avocado for contrasting texture. The cucumbers and grapes are both crisp and I wanted a creamy element.

The Dorothy Lane salad used a simple oil and vinegar dressing, which I amped up by increasing the garlic and adding some some fresh mint from my container garden (new this year! I’m actually growing something!).

I love the result.  This cucumber salad is fresh and satisfying with a lovely flavor.  I hope you love it as much as I do!

Cucumber, Green Grape, and Avocado Salad

This salad is fresh and satisfying with a lovely flavor

  • Author: Healthy Happy Mama
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes resting time
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: serves 4 - 6
  • Category: Salad
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs seedless cucumbers (about 2 large cucumbers), peeled or unpeeled*
  • kosher salt
  • Approximately 30 green grapes, sliced in half
  • 1 avocado, cut into small chunks
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons white wine vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, chopped

Instructions

  • Slice the cucumbers in half lengthwise.  (*If using cucumbers with seeds, use a spoon to scoop out the middle and discard the seeds.)  Then cut the cucumbers crosswise into 1/4″-1/2″ slices.  Place in a  large bowl and sprinkle with about a teaspoon of kosher salt.  Toss to distribute the salt evenly around the cucumber pieces.  Let sit for 20 to 25 minutes while the salt helps pull excess moisture out of the cucumbers.  Then rinse off the salt, drain the cucumbers, and squeeze out any more excess moisture with a cloth or paper towels.
  • Mix the cucumbers, grapes, and avocado in a large bowl.  In a small, separate bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, garlic, and mint.  Drizzle the dressing over the cucumber mixture and carefully stir to evenly coat everything.  Add more salt to taste, if preferred.  (I did not add extra salt.)  Enjoy!

Massaged Kale and Chard Antioxidant Salad (Vegan)

This Massaged Kale Salad has chard for extra nutrition and berries to boost its antioxidant power! Chickpeas and quinoa add protein and bulk to this vegan salad. Massaged Kale Salad recipe #salad #healthy #vegan #glutenfree #healthyrecipes #saladrecipes #easyrecipes #summerrecipes #berries #blueberries #strawberries

This month I’m running a #saladeveryday challenge in my Facebook Group. It’s been a great way to be intentional about eating a fresh salad for one meal each day this month. Salads are my favorite way to pack in a big variety of fruits and vegetables!

We have all been motivating each other and sharing great salad ideas. It’s been fun and helpful and I’d LOVE to have you join us! Come on over to The Happy Healthy Mamas Facebook Group and request to join and I’ll get you added right away! P.S. There are weekly prizes! 🙂

This massaged kale salad recipe was inspired by the #saladeveryday challenge. I get bored eating the same type of salad too often, so I knew I’d need some new recipes to keep me satisfied this month.

Instead of just kale, I added chard to the mix. The more leafy greens the merrier, you know what I mean? Chard is a hard, bitter green like kale, so I went the massaged salad route.

I don’t massage kale when I chop it very finely for a salad, like this Ultimate Chopped Kale Salad , this Autumn Kale Salad , and this Asian Kale Salad.

But when I’m leaving the leaves a little bigger, massaging helps. Kale (and chard) are tough, not tender, and massaging them makes them more just tender enough.

For this salad, I used a whole avocado to massage the kale and chard. I loved the texture that resulted. Massaged Kale Salad recipe #salad #healthy #vegan #glutenfree #healthyrecipes #saladrecipes #easyrecipes #summerrecipes #berries #blueberries #strawberries #quinoa #chickpeas

Roasted chickpeas and quinoa give this massaged kale salad hearty enough to be a main-course salad. It serves two as a main course, four as a side.

I call this an antioxidant salad because the deep pigments in kale and chard mean that they are full of protective antioxidants. On top of those, I added strawberries and blueberries, which add even more antioxidants. The fruits also add a nice balance of flavor.

Tim loved this salad as much as I did, which is always a bonus. I hope you and your family love it, too!

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 2-6 servings

Ingredients

For the Dressing

  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • juice from 1/2 large lemon
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar (honey may be substituted)
  • large pinch of salt
  • large pinch of black pepper

For the Salad

1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas

1 tablespoon avocado oil

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 small bunch red kale, veins removed and roughly chopped

1 small bunch red chard, veins removed and roughly chopped

1 avocado

1/2 cup cooked quinoa

2/3 cup fresh blueberries

8 large strawberries, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Whisk together all of the ingredients to the dressing. Set aside.
  3. Drain and rinse your chickpeas and dry them well. Place them on a rimmed baking sheet and add 1 tablespoon avocado oil and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Toss to coat. Roast them in the oven until they are crispy, about 10 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, put your kale and chard leaves in a large bowl. Add the whole avocado and use your hands to massage the avocado into the kale and chard leaves. Massage the leaves until they are just tender, but not mushy, about 1 minute.
  5. Add the cooked chickpeas, cooked quinoa, blueberries, and strawberries to the greens and toss. Add the dressing and toss again so that everything is evenly coated with the dressing.
  6. You can serve right away, but I like this best when it has about 30 minutes to chill in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

Avocado Smoothie Bowl Recipe

This Avocado Smoothie Bowl is a filling way to start your day and has a balanced amount of carbs, healthy fats, and protein!

Avocado Smoothie Bowl recipe

Avocado Smoothie Bowl

If you love the idea of smoothies, but don’t like drinking your breakfast, this Avocado Smoothie Bowl is for you!

You make smoothie bowls in a blender, just like you would a regular smoothie.

Avocado Smoothie Bowl ingredients in blender recipe #healthyrecipe #smoothies #smoothie #smoothiebowl #avocadosmoothie #avocado #healthybreakfast #breakfast #summer

This one is filled with AVOCADO!

A smoothie bowl is just like a smoothie, only thick enough that you can eat it with a spoon.

Avocado Smoothie Bowl recipe #healthyrecipe #smoothies #smoothie #smoothiebowl #avocadosmoothie #avocado #healthybreakfast #breakfast #summer

I’ve been making all kinds of smoothie bowls lately. This Avocado Smoothie Bowl is filled with goodness that makes it a great, balanced breakfast.

Avocado Smoothie Bowl Ingredients

  • avocado
  • raw cacao powder
  • collagen powder
  • banana
  • almond butter
  • almond milk
  • stevia
  • ice

You don’t necessarily have to use the collagen powder, but it gives it a better balance of protein and has a lot of health benefits, as well. You can read about the health benefits of collagen in my Café Mocha Collagen Protein Smoothie post. The kinds of collagen we like are this unflavored collagen from Bulletproof or this marine collagen from Vital Proteins.

The best part about smoothie bowls are the tooooppppings! I think that’s why I’ve been loving smoothie bowls so much. You can add lots of toppings that give flavor and crunch.

I give you a list of suggestions, but you can definitely make this your own. Have fun!

3-ingredient Banana Cookies

It’s hard to believe, but if you put mashed banana, rolled oats, and chocolate chips together and bake them, they come out as a delicious, healthy cookie!

I remember the first time I made 3-ingredient Banana Cookies. I couldn’t believe they were so good with just bananas and oats as the base.

There’s some added sugar from the dark chocolate chips, but no other sugars are added. That’s pretty rare with a cookie! You could even use these stevia-sweetened chocolate chips if you want/need these made with totally no added sugars.

3-ingredient Banana Cookies recipe #healthy #vegan #glutenfree #breakfast #snacks #recipe #3ingredient What’s really great about these 3-ingredient Banana Cookies is they takes 5 minutes to mix together and 10 minutes to bake. You’re 15 minutes away from a sweet treat that’s healthy enough to be considered a breakfast cookie!

I find the best ratio of banana to oats is 1:2. I mash and measure my banana, and it usually ends up at 2 1/2 medium bananas to get 1 cup of mashed banana. Then I add my oats and chocolate chips and it’s baking time. So easy!3-ingredient Banana Cookies recipe #healthy #vegan #glutenfree #breakfast #snacks #recipe #3ingredient I use a cookie scoop and don’t flatten them. I like them better and think they hold together better this way.

Right out of the oven, these 3-ingredient Banana Cookies are of course delicious. I know I have trouble waiting for them to cool. BUT…they do hold together best when you let them cool completely first.  I just keep them on the cookie sheet and let them cool that way.3-ingredient Banana Cookies recipe #healthy #vegan #glutenfree #breakfast #snacks #recipe #3ingredient

I hope your family loves these as much as we do!

May Favorites

May FavoritesJust like that, it’s June. I knew this would happen. As soon as the calendar said MAY I felt it slipping away, whizzing by me in a blur of moments that I tried to pull out my iPhone to capture. I’m still spinning.

Today I’m starting a new monthly series that will be a mash up of my coffee talk posts and my natural products I’m loving now posts. Just a place where I can connect with you, my readers, and chat about what’s been going on and what I’ve been loving.

Ideally it’ll come at the end of the end of the month instead of the new month. But, you know, May. May was rough.

Summer Break

May FavoritesThis is Luke on his last day of kindergarten. He graduated from kindergarten and the beloved Montessori school where he and Meghan both went for three years. Yes, I cried. May FavoritesThe good news is that Luke and Meghan will be in the same school next year. Finally! This will make life easier for sure.

And just like that, it’s summer break.

Like most years, I’m ready but not ready. Ready to have a more relaxed morning schedule, have a break from packing lunches and rushing to school.

Not ready for the inevitable “I’m bored” pleas and sibling bickering that comes with being together more.

The work-at-home gig is tough during these summer months. A big part of me wants to revert to my teaching days and take the summer off, but then there’s that part of me that never stops creating content. I can’t turn my brain off!

Gardening

Because May was so crazy, I totally neglected our outdoor space. My containers usually have flowers by now, but they are empty. The flower beds need serious work. Luke and I spent two hours pulling weeds one day, and now they’re all back. Do you have any natural weed solutions? I’ve heard of people using blow torches! That makes me laugh a little. I’d love your to hear if you have any ideas!

I had big plans to get back into vegetable gardening this year, but it didn’t happen. Is it too late? Maybe I’ll just do a few containers and make a plan for next year. (Ha! I said that last year…)

On My Bookshelf

May FavoritesI started out this year with a goal of reading two books per month, one fiction and one non-fiction. The non-fiction has been easier to keep up with than the fiction. I love reading fiction, but it’s almost like a luxury I feel guilty affording myself. Even as I type that it sounds ridiculous, but it’s the truth.

The books I’ve loved recently:

Essentialism: the Discipled Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

This is a good one for anyone who needs to declutter their work life. Much of it can be applied to life in general, not just work life.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

This is a memoir that will force you to ponder your own mortality. Written by a young neurosurgeon faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis, this is not a light beach read. Have your tissues ready! It’s well written and one that had me thinking long after I finished it.  I actually listened to this one on Audible which I love for getting “reading” done while I’m doing things like laundry or driving.

Salt, Acid, Salt, Heat by Samin Nosrat

Normally I wouldn’t put a cookbook type book in the “what I’ve read lately” category, but this is so much more than a cookbook. This is a cooking bible. It’s reinforced much of what I’ve intuitively learned in the kitchen over the years, while helping me leap to the next level. A must read for anyone who loves cooking and wants to be a better home cook.

Home Improvements

May FavoritesIn May we completed a project that’s been in the works for a while. Our “exercise room” was an unfinished space that we decided to finish. We drywalled and added rubber flooring. (Ok, by “we” I mean we hired a guy to do it for us…we aren’t that handy.)

Tim prefers to workout at home instead of going to the gym, so this project was more for him than me. I still go to the gym, but have been using the new space to workout 1-2 times a week. I just get a much better workout in a class setting these days. I need someone to push me! May FavoritesWe also made a HUGE purchase for our exercise room…an infrared sauna! After much research, we ended up with this brand. Infrared saunas have a variety of health benefits you can read about here if you’re interested. We have been LOVING it.

Fitness

May FavoritesSpeaking of working out, I recently started going to Orange Theory Fitness. Have you tried it? It’s a high intensity workout with treadmills, water rowers, and weights. You wear a heart rate monitor to keep track of your intensity level. It’s a great workout! I usually burn between 500-600 calories in a hour, which is awesome.

Pool Time

We belong to a pool so we spend a lot of time there in the summer. I got Meghan some fun swim stuff from the Cat and Jack line at Target. Don’t they have the cutest reasonably-priced clothes for kids? I got her this coverup, this hat, (<–on clearance right now!) and this swimsuit. So adorable!

For Luke I ordered some basic suits from Land’s End when they had a sale.

If you are in need of a natural sunscreen that does NOT go on your skin in a thick, white paste that won’t rub in, you need to get some Beautycounter sunscreen. It is light, rubs in easily, has a very light scent, and is SAFE. I can’t say enough good things about it! It’s water resistant up to 40 minutes (make sure you reapply often!) and works very well. Best of all, there are NO hormone-disrupting chemicals. By far, this is the best natural sunscreen I’ve ever tried. They do have a non-aerosol spray that I ordered, but have not tried yet. The cream is really easy to apply, but I just wanted to see what the spray was like. This is our go-to all summer long.
